A few years ago, in this world, there has been a fever, in which the only people who lived, turned into a malfetto. A malfetto is a child under the age of eighteen who came out of the fever alive -as none of the adults did- but is marked with a strange mark on their body and a power that comes with it.
Adelina, her sister, and their mother fall to the fever, but while her sister Violetta comes out unscathed and Adelina lives as a malfetto, their mother does not. Adelina's power is an illusion, and her mark on her body is her hair. Her left eye is replaced by a scar and her hair and eyelashes turn silver. However, in this world, this society, they go about discriminating the malfetto populace. When her father tries to sell her, she runs away and her father goes after her. In the spur of the moment, she kills him and is caught on the run by the Inquisitors. She is on trial for burning, but before she is sentenced, she is saved by the daggers.
