Born under millions shadows - Phillip Guse

I read this book for my English class, as a book for the reading challenge, I got to know this book because a friend gave me this book as a present, but I never had the change to read it, so I used this opportunity.

Born Under A Million Shadows is written by the British journalist, Andrea Busfield as a declaration of love to the beautiful country Afghanistan. The author is doing this by writing about the contrast between the Afghanistan traditions and the Western traditions, from the point of view of the eleven years old, modest boy called Fawad. This book is a real life fiction book.

Fawad is in this book the main character and in my opinion also the best one. Fawad is a little boy grown in Kabul, Afghanistan. The Taliban made a lot of mess in the city in the once happy and peaceful city Afghanistan’s.  They killed Fawad's father and brother and they kidnaped her sister. Fawad and his mother lives with her aunt in a small house, however the Muslim Fawad is full of happiness and humour. Moreover, through the book he gets surprised by the the different costumes of the western people once his mother got a job in a house from western people as a maid.  He becomes a boy with lots of luck and he becomes to see much more about the world he thought he would be.

The three western people, owner of the house are in this book the minor characters, James, Georgie and May. Fawad is surprised for their strange costumes, traditions and religion.  James the journalist does not do much more than hang around and drinking half-naked his beer in the sun, the blond May swarms for women and Georgie wears jeans and smokes. Celebrating Christmas by giving presents to each other, celebrating new year by drinking alcohol. All these things are new for Fawad and against the Muslim, he thinks they are strange weird people, however they make him laugh each time more and they make him remember how beautiful his country is even in bad times.

The theme of this book is how beautiful Afghanistan is and how lovely the people are, even if the country is full of war, misunderstandings and hate. How love and beauty can even be more powerful than hate and war. In my opinion I think the author succeed to transmit this theme, because of the way how she wrote, full of humour and happiness, despite the horrible thing in the book. Moreover, the perspective of the small Fawad makes it easier to associate with.  Therefore, I enjoyed to read the book and I recommend this book to read. Specially for people that like humour novels and that are open minded persons.

Around the world in 80 days reflection

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS

This month I read a book called ‘Around the world in 80 days’. This is a science fiction book. The author is Jules Gabriel Verne, one of the famous author around the world. He created many famous books, such as ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea’. The main idea is Phileas Fogg got a bet from his friends. The bet is about ‘whether Fogg is around the world in 80 days or not’. Finally, he won the bet.
Phileas Fogg is the main character. He is intelligent, educated, sociable and optimistic. He would calm and intelligent when he got issues.
Passepartout is the minor character. He helps Phileas Fogg to get though the hard time. He is a good and loyal servant.
The final part. It is excited because he is arrested by polices what makes he almost miss his train. It is interesting and funny. It mentions a lot of information about science. Therefore, I love this part.
I realized confidence is important for everything. In our daily life, confidence is a big power to affect you to challenge something difficult. He won the bet, because he had much confidence to believe in himself. From this story, I know whatever we do we must have enough confidence and determination. Nothing in the world is difficult for one who sets his mind on it.

Naughty Amelia Jane

-I read a book calling “Naughty Amelia Jane” that was written by Enid Blyton. This is story about a mischievous doll named Amelia Jane. All the store-bought toys in the nursery are always well behaved, but homemade Amelia Jane is always up to tricks. Amelia Jane can never be good for more than one week. She often plays nasty tricks on the other toys and gets them all into trouble. As a result, the toys always try to teach Amelia Jane a lesson by playing some tricks on her, but Amelia Jane never learns. With every trick she plays, someone always ends up hurt, and sometimes even she gets upset. After each trick Amelia Jane plays she promises to be good, but never remains true to this promise. Through the actions of Amelia Jane it is very easy to highlight the dangers of being naughty and playing tricks, which would be helpful when teaching children about right and wrong. Also, no matter how naughty Amelia Jane has been, the other toys in the nursery always help her when she is in trouble or frightened, teaching the lesson 'treat others as you would like to be treated'.
I think the message of this book is we need to be nice and good to anyone. It is including not living things that are furniture, toys and anything.

"Looking for Alaska" by John Green

Explorer’s World – Communication skills
"LOOKING FOR ALASKA"

The book that I’ve read was “Looking for Alaska”, by John Green. It fits in the world of Young Adult and romance, as it revolves around the love chemistry between the main character, Miles, and a girl, Alaska.

The main character, Miles, is a new kid to a boarding school that he went to by choice. Because of his roommate, the “colonel” and his other friends – Alaska, Takumi, and Lara –
They’ve changed Miles’ life. Before, Miles was the type of kid who kept to himself, was friends with everyone but not really, he didn’t attract any attention. Now, at the boarding school, he finally has people to rely on, yet this people have influenced him to try new things, causing him to change.

There’s the Colonel, he takes care of Miles whenever he’s down, and Miles does the same to him. When Miles first met Alaska, he was struck by her beauty, and then fell in love in her, but she couldn’t return the same feelings he has for her.

The main turning point of the story was when Alaska got into a car crash while under the influence of drinking, albeit some thinks that it wasn’t an accident. This was foreshadowed, a little before the event occurred, John Green was clever when he emphasized this foreshadow using italics on certain words, in the chapter before.

“Looking for Alaska,” has the theme which tells the readers about what would happen once you meet that one person who has changed your life, changed how you look at things, and just someone that you’ve become so attached to. But one day, they’re just gone, and you could’ve done something to stop it, but you didn’t.
